Happy Hump Day! With my recent transition to vegan-ism, I'm always on the hunt for great tasting, efficient, all natural, vegan friendly protein powders! I have been trying many on the market for the past few months. Walk down the aisles of a health or supplement shop and you will BOMBARDED with different flavours and blends. You'll find things such as Whey Protein Powder, Casein Protein Powder, Pea Protein Powder, Soy Protein Powder, Hemp Protein Powder, Brown Rice Protein Powder and Vegan Protein Powder blends.
Firstly, if you're confused, make sure you always ask for assistance and the experts should be able to guide you in the right direction! Of course, all of our fitness goals are different so the 'perfect protein' will be different for everyone! As a rule of thumb for girls like me, stick to your low fat, carb and sugar blend. As a rule for EVERYONE, go for a protein that has the LEAST amount of ingredients as possible, the less, the more natural! Try and source most of your protein from your foods - a powder is just to make sure you optimise that protein intake. For vegans and vegetarians, I find protein powder that little bit more important as we are more limited for food-based, high protein options.
Often I find when choosing between flavours for vegans AND non-vegans, make sure you go for a flavour you can stomach on a daily basis. Perhaps the 'Chocolate Ice cream Birthday Cake' flavoured protein powder sitting at the front of the shelf may sound enticing for 2 minutes, but try forcing yourself to drink that after a sweaty workout everyday! Go for one that can be versatile! If you love chocolate, stick to it. I personally love to go for vanilla each time! I can then mix flavours to whatever my heart desires each day. Some days I add in strawberries, the next I add in a big scoop of cacao to make it chocolate - that way you'll NEVER get bored of flavour.
Here are my current top 6 favourite vegan approved protein blends!
1) ISOWHEY WHOLEFOODS ORGANIC BIO-FERMENTED PEA + BROWN RICE PROTEIN POWDER
IsoWhey Wholefoods Organic Bio-Fermented Pea + Brown Rice Protein is an alkaline, low-allergenic protein combination of organic sprouted bio-fermented golden pea and organic sprouted rice proteins uniquely formulated to provide a complete amino acid profile, suitable for vegan and vegetarian diets.
This delicious protein powder boasts an innovative nutrient-dense sprouted blend of ancient whole grains, seeds and legumes including quinoa, amaranth, buckwheat, millet, chia, alfalfa, flax, sunflower, pumpkin, chia and sesame for added nutritional benefit. As well as providing a range of antioxidant-rich superfoods to nutritionally support health, including sacha inchi, maca, raw cacao, gubinge and lucuma. Flavours available are just 1 in natural.
I love this one because it is a party of different seeds and grains! This one is my favourite for adding into protein cakes, cupcakes & balls! Think about just how HEALTHY that cupcake is?! ;) I find this powder to be extremely versatile for baking and for shakes - versatility is big plus for me! If I can have one protein that can do it ALL, then I'm one happy customer! This blend gives you sustained energy throughout the day, and because of the nutrients packed in it, gives you glowing skin!!! Price is $35.95 AUD.
2) ISOWHEY ORGANIC HEMP PROTEIN POWDER
Hemp is 50-60 % protein and has an excellent amino acid profile. It is the only plant protein that stores its protein in the form of edestin and albumin, which are highly digestible. It also contains naturally occurring fibre, high in polyunsaturated fatty acids, very low in carbohydrates, no sodium and loaded with B vitamins, minerals and vitamin D3 - the only plant source of D3! This makes hemp a real superfood. Flavours available are just 1 in natural.
Not only can you eat this one but it makes a killer face & body scrub! You can check the recipe on the IsoWhey website, but I've tried it and LOVE it! Because of the flavour, it's perfect to add into your green smoothies! For anyone wanting a blend that is PACKED full of organic superfoods, this is it! You couldn't get more of a nutrient overload in one drink! Price is $35.95 AUD.
3) SUN WARRIOR
Sunwarrior Classic Protein uses bran from raw sprouted whole grain brown rice, to create the first completely hypoallergenic protein, containing all essential and non-essential amino acids in a perfectly balanced profile. Sunwarrior Classic Protein has the highest amount of (non soy) raw, whole-grain sprouted, vegan protein of any product available. The 3 flavours available are Natural, Chocolate & Vanilla.
I find the taste of this to be much nicer than the OLD sun warrior formula, it has quite a sweet taste so I wouldn't opt to add this into green smoothies. It is PERFECT for the morning energy kick and also keeps you full for longer. This one is relatively affordable and is priced around $62 - $69 AUD.
4) MRM VEGGIE ELITE
MRM Veggie Elite levels the protein playing field by offering a true plant-based alternative to whey. Our select combination of plant proteins creates a highly viable vegan-friendly blend, that ably delivers all of the essential amino acids necessary to meet human health standards of consumption, with vital branched-chain amino acids (BCAA) to aid muscle growth and exercise recovery.
MRM Veggie Elite adjusts grams of protein per serving by using the True Digestibility Scale of individual proteins to create a clean, plant-based formula to rival whey, then adds Digest-All VP enzyme blend to further aid digestion and assimilation of plant-based proteins. The pea and brown rice selected for Veggie Elite contain a minimum 80 percent protein content by weight, offering higher digestibility, absorption and retention than whole food combinations – in a complete plant-based protein formula that eliminates the need for unnecessary carbohydrates and calories found in whole foods. The 2 flavours available are Vanilla Bean & Chocolate Mocha.
I LOVE THIS ONE WITH ALL OF MY HEART. I just find it to have an really unique & amazing texture for a vegan protein blend. It's completely smooth and often it's hard to not find one that isn't chalky! (though they do exist!). I would say this one is the best for adding to protein pancakes as the texture is slightly thicker. This powder also digests like a charm! Anyone that has a sensitive tummy will have no issues with this one. Best thing is, it's VERY cheap for a vegan protein powder priced between $38 - $55 AUD.
5) MRM VEGGIE PROTEIN
MRM's Veggie Protein is an all natural vegetarian super food complex designed to meet protein needs. Each ingredient was chosen for its ability to deliver maximum nutrient concentrations while providing a smooth pleasant taste. The Pro-Veggie Blend features a complete amino acid profile through a specific combination of pea protein isolate, organic hemp protein powder, organic brown rice protein concentrate, whole chia seed powder and whole flax seed powder. To assist with protein and fiber digestion, MRM has added a precise blend of digestive enzymes to minimize the occurrence and discomfort from gas and bloating.
Completing the formula, MRM's Veggie Protein includes a High ORAC Antioxidant blend concentrated from 13 different Non-GMO fruits and vegetables. Research has proven that blueberries, cherries, bilberries, broccoli, spinach (to name a few) contain potent antioxidant nutrients to support optimal health and wellness. The 2 flavours available are Chocolate & Vanilla.
This protein has a reputation for being quite grainy, HOWEVER, the taste is so damn good! If you can get past the texture, you'll love the taste! Often one will cancel out the other. I find it needs more water mixed with it than stated and that should help with the consistency. This is a great choice for anyone who is allergic to soy protein. Another perk of this one is the price, coming in around $24 - $35 AUD.
6) S.A.N RAW FUSION
RAWFUSION is the brainchild of over 1 year of intense research & experimentation in the field of protein cold-extrusion technologies. With RAWFUSION you are getting 21 grams of a custom bio-fermented, allergen, GMO & Animal FREE plant protein fusion which contains Pea Protein Isolate, Brown Rice Sprouted & Artichoke Protein Concentrate swirled in a deliciously addicting Omega Fatty Acid rich sunflower oil matrix.
RAWFUSION amino acid profile mimics that of whey/milk thus is rich in Glutamine and contains over 4,500 mg of BCAAs (Leucine, Isoleucine, Valine) per 1 scoop. Our patent pending formulation is free of solvents, radiation, artificial colors, sweeteners or anything created synthetically. Flavours available are Chocolate Strawberry, Rich Chocolate, Banana Nut, Peanut Chocolate Fudge & Vanilla Bean.
This one can be tricky to get your hands on! You won't find it on I-Herb, but you should be able to find it through other supplement retailers. Now not that I ever go off calorie intake but for those who do, this one has an incredibly low calorie intake per serving. Aswell as low calories, it is high in protein but very low in carbohydrates. This one is a protein that tastes great mixed with water or with almond, oat or coconut milk! Price between $35 - $55 AUD.
7) VEGA SPORT PERFORMANCE PROTEIN
Vega Sport is the first all-natural, plant-based performance enhancement system specifically developed to help athletes perform at their best—before, during and after training and competition. Vega Sport Performance Protein is a plant-based, dairy, gluten and soy free and contain no artificial flavours, colours or sweeteners. Flavours available are Vanilla, Chocolate and Berry.
If you are an athlete or just an excessive gym go-er this one is for you! It is one of the best plant-based protein powder for recovery on the market! Another perk of this powder it is a mix of 5 DIFFERENT types of protein, so it's a great way to get your protein from a mixed source. Flavour and texture are both great! This is one of my favourites to add into protein banana ice cream! YUM! Price is a little more expensive, but definitely worth the investment, it ranges between $79 - $91 AUD.
I hope this helps some of my vegans, vegetarians or people just wanting to try something different! Of course, if you have any more questions, feel free to send me an email to firstname.lastname@example.org!
